Membership of the Governing Body (current) is:

Mrs. J. Lowes – Chair of FGB
Chair of SMSC Committee

I have lived in Dalton for many years and my children attended Chapel Street Infants and George Romney Junior Schools. I am a governor at Chapel Street Infants and Nursery School and served as chair at George Romney for a number of years.
As a governing body I would like to think that not only do we have a responsibility for the effectiveness of the school but we also have a passion for the children to succeed and achieve their full potential.

Mrs. J. Dorsett – Staff Governor

I have been a teacher at George Romney Junior School for many years and currently teach Year 3 and Year 4 children. I was voted on to the governing body by my fellow colleagues as staff representative. I am committed to providing a happy and safe learning enviroment.

Mrs. E. Dawes – Parent Governor

Being a parent governor is very rewarding. It’s an ideal way to learn more about the education system and to support the school to provide the best for the children.

Mrs. H. McMurdo – Parent Governor

I have 2 Daughters, one who has just started at George Romney Junior School and one who attends Pre-School at Chapel Street school. I am passionate and committed in my governor role to assist and challenge the school to create an environment where the children are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential.

Mrs. V. Fitzgibbons – Co-Opted Governor

I am the Assistant Headteacher and SENCO at Newbarns Primary and Nursery School in Barrow. I taught at a Dalton school for almost 10 years and have a little boy. I have a keen interest in the quality of education and provision for all pupils, regardless of their barriers to learning. I have a specific interest in the education of children with Special Educational Needs. As a Governor, my aim is to ensure all children at George Romney achieve to their full potential and receive a full, broad and balanced curriculum. George Romney is a happy place to learn and I want to ensure this is the case for all children, thus enabling them to thrive and succeed..

Mr. D. Johnson – Co-Opted Governor

I have lived in Dalton for a number of years and feel that I can bring varied experience to the governing board. Having recently been appointed a governor I hope to bring new ideas to the table and a different outlook to topical conversations. I also aim to challenge the existing processes, to ensure the school is consistently improving, creating a positive environment for the children, staff and wider community.

What is the role of the Governing Body?

The role of the Local Governing Body is strategic; its key functions are to:

Set the aims and objectives for the school
Set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
Set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
Monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
Be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher. The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, day to day management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing body.

What do Governors do?

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. The governing body supports the head and staff by positively promoting the work of the school, celebrating its achievements, and working to ensure the best outcomes for the pupils. Governors appoint the Headteacher and are involved in the appointment of other staff. Governors hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and ask questions to check the performance of the school. Working with the head teacher, governors make the tough decisions about balancing resources.

Each individual governor is a member of a governing body, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors do not act independently of the rest of the governing body. Decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body. As long as they act within the law, governors are protected from any financial liability for the decisions they take.

The Governing Body has many statutory duties in ensuring that pupils receive the best education possible. They have to decide on an effective framework (aims, plans and policies) which will enable the Headteacher to manage the school and staff to carry out their duties.

At George Romney Junior School we do our best to fulfil our roles as Governors. Meetings are very well attended and everyone participates in discussions etc. Where possible Governors attend school events and support the school by assisting on projects when asked. The structure of the membership ensures there are strong links with the wider community.

The governor body is committed to our school providing a safe and happy place for the pupils of George Romney Junior School, where they can achieve their potential.
